Thermography services in Oman: switchgear, transformers, substations and solar plants scanned under load, every hot spot graded before the summer peak.
VB carries out infrared thermography inspection for refineries, petrochemical plants, power and desalination plants, solar PV plants and industrial sites across Oman, from Muscat and Sohar to Duqm and Salalah. Every finding is graded by its temperature difference against a similar component under similar load, with the load recorded, so Oman's ambient heat never hides or exaggerates a fault.

Who asks for it
Why do plants in Oman commission thermography?
Plants in Oman commission thermography for four reasons: to find and fix hot connections before the summer peak load, to give the property insurer evidence at renewal, to meet the operator's own electrical maintenance standard, and to plan the repair list for a shutdown or turnaround. A scan done in the cooler months leaves time to repair every finding before the hottest weeks.
| Trigger | What the site needs | What the VB report gives |
|---|---|---|
| Summer peak load | Every weak joint found while there is still time to fix it | Findings ranked by severity, with repair dates before the peak |
| Insurer survey or renewal | Evidence that overheating risks are found and closed | Findings, actions taken and re-scan results |
| Operator maintenance standard | An annual infrared survey to the company or group standard | Severity mapped to the standard the site uses |
| Shutdown or turnaround | A repair list ready before the outage window opens | Feeder-tagged work list, sorted by priority |
The Oman difference
How does Oman's summer heat affect a thermography scan?
High ambient temperature raises the temperature of every component, so in Oman a reading on its own says little. VB grades each finding by its temperature difference against a similar component under similar load, records the ambient and the load at the time of the scan, and schedules outdoor substations and solar plants away from direct midday sun on the camera.
| Temperature difference | Meaning | Action |
|---|---|---|
| 1 °C to 3 °C | Possible deficiency | Investigate |
| 4 °C to 15 °C | Probable deficiency | Repair as time permits |
| Above 15 °C | Major discrepancy | Repair immediately |

What VB scans
What does a thermography inspection cover at an Oman site?
A thermography inspection covers every energised connection that carries load: HV switchgear and ring main units, transformers, LV switchboards, MCCs and distribution boards, VFD and UPS panels, cable terminations, solar inverters, combiner boxes and PV strings, and BESS containers. Each is scanned at normal operating load under the site permit-to-work.
| Equipment | What the scan finds | How VB plans access |
|---|---|---|
| HV switchgear, RMUs | Busbar joints, breaker contacts, cable terminations | Viewing windows or covers opened under a permit |
| Transformers and substations | Bushings, clamps, jumpers, isolators, radiators | From the safe distance, away from direct sun on the lens |
| LV switchboards, MCCs, DBs | Feeder lugs, breaker and fuse terminals, contactors | Covers removed by the site electrician |
| VFD and UPS panels | Terminals, heat sinks, cooling fans and filters | At running load |
| Solar PV plants | Hot cells, bypass diodes, string and combiner heating, inverter terminals | To IEC TS 62446-3, at adequate irradiance |
| BESS containers | PCS terminals, DC combiners, enclosure hot spots | During a planned charge or discharge |

Solar and BESS
How is thermography done on a solar PV plant in Oman?
Thermography of a solar PV plant follows IEC TS 62446-3, the IEC specification for outdoor infrared thermography of PV modules and plants. Modules, strings and combiner boxes are scanned at adequate irradiance with the plant generating, inverters and transformers are scanned at load, and every anomaly is classed and located by string so the O&M team can go straight to it.
- Modules and strings · hot cells, bypass diodes, soiling and shading patterns
- Combiner boxes · fuse and terminal heating
- Inverters and transformers · terminals and cooling at load
- BESS · scanned during a planned charge or discharge
Where VB scans in Oman
Which Oman industries does VB scan?
VB scans refineries and petrochemical plants, power and desalination plants, solar PV plants and their substations, and industrial and commercial sites, in Muscat, Sohar, Duqm, Salalah and the interior. Hazardous-area work runs under the site permit-to-work and gas-testing routine.
Refineries and petrochemicals
Substations, MCCs and process feeders, scanned under the site permit system with findings tied to the turnaround list.
Power and desalination
Generator switchgear, auxiliary transformers, MCCs and the switchyard, scanned at load before the summer peak.
Solar PV and BESS
Modules, strings, combiners, inverters and BESS to IEC TS 62446-3, with anomalies located by string.
One mobilisation
Should thermography be done with an arc flash study in Oman?
In Oman it usually should, because mobilising an engineering team to Sohar, Duqm or Salalah is the larger part of the cost. While panel covers are open for the infrared scan, the same team records nameplates and protection settings for the arc flash model and photographs every warning label, and a risk assessment older than five years (NFPA 70E 130.5(G)) is refreshed from that data.
| On the same visit | What you get | Where it goes next |
|---|---|---|
| Infrared scan | Graded hot-spot list for the site | Maintenance and turnaround planning |
| Warning label survey | Photo record of each label and its study date | An arc flash study in Oman when the review is due |
| Protection and nameplate data | Captured on site in ElecTwin® | An ETAP or SKM model of the network |

Tool expertise
Which software do VB's arc flash teams work in?
VB has dedicated engineering teams with hands-on expertise in ETAP, SKM PowerTools, CYME, EasyPower, PSS®E and NEPLAN. When the scan or the label check leads to an arc flash study, it runs in whichever software your site or operator standard already uses.
Before you book
Questions site and maintenance managers in Oman ask VB about thermography
How much do thermography services cost in Oman?
A thermography survey in Oman is quoted by VB as one fixed price per site. The price reflects mobilisation to the site, the number of scan days, which depends on how many switchgear sections, panels, inverters, transformers and BESS containers are in scope, and the report. The plan at the top of this page shows the scan days for your equipment.
When is the best time to do thermography in Oman?
Schedule the main scan in the cooler months before the summer peak, so every finding can be repaired before the heaviest load of the year. The scan still needs the equipment at normal operating load, so it is timed to working shifts, and outdoor substations and solar plants are scanned away from direct midday sun on the camera.
Does high ambient temperature affect thermography results?
Yes. High ambient raises the temperature of every component, so an absolute reading can mislead. VB grades each finding by its temperature difference against a similar component under similar load, as in ANSI/NETA MTS Table 100.18, and records the ambient and the load with every finding.
What temperature difference is a problem in an electrical panel?
Under ANSI/NETA MTS Table 100.18, a difference of 1 to 3 °C between similar components under similar load is a possible deficiency to investigate, 4 to 15 °C is a probable deficiency to repair as time permits, and above 15 °C is a major discrepancy to repair immediately.
How is thermography of a solar PV plant done?
It follows IEC TS 62446-3, the IEC specification for outdoor infrared thermography of PV modules and plants. Modules, strings and combiner boxes are scanned at adequate irradiance with the plant generating, inverters and transformers are scanned at load, and each anomaly is located by string.
Can thermography be done in a refinery without a shutdown?
Yes. Thermography is done on live equipment at normal operating load, under the site permit-to-work and gas-testing routine, with escorts in hazardous areas. The findings become the repair list for the next shutdown or turnaround.
What does a thermography report include?
For every finding: the thermal and visible image, the equipment and feeder tag, the temperature difference against a similar component, the load and ambient at the time of the scan, the severity and the repair priority, plus a summary by severity for the site manager.
How long does a thermography survey take for a site in Oman?
Most single sites in Oman take two to five scan days for a two-person team, set by the equipment count rather than the plot area, plus mobilisation. Refineries and large power and desalination plants take longer because of permits, escorts and the number of substations. The plan on this page turns your counts into scan days.
