The original 132 kV-to-11 kV intake at a coastal refinery was rated for a 30-year-old fault-current envelope. Reality has grown 38 percent. We recompute fault levels in ETAP against the actual short-circuit MVA at the utility tie, re-grade relay coordination from the 132 kV breaker down to the lowest motor MCC, and re-issue the protection co-ordination report under CEng MIE signature.
Pre-2018 arc flash studies used the 2002 method and frequently overstate or understate incident energy by 20-40 percent. We recompute incident energy across every bus from 132 kV down to 415 V, re-derive ATPV ratings in cal/cm-squared, install bilingual labels, and lock the recertification window for the 5-year cycle.
Where a 50-year-old refinery has had 3 modernisations and 4 ownership changes, the drawing set has drifted past usability. We capture the plant footprint with tripod and drone LiDAR at 6 mm registered accuracy, reconcile to P+ID + isometric + GA, and hand back a defensible drawing set ready for the next capex cycle.
